In the 1999 murder of Takaba Namiko (then 32) at her apartment in Nagoya’s Nishi Ward, suspect Yasufuku Kumiko (69), a part-time worker from Minato Ward who was arrested on suspicion of murder, told Takaba’s husband, Satoru (69), that she “wanted him to understand the difficulties of raising a child,” according to interviews with investigators. According to sources, Yasufuku lost her young daughter to illness about 10 years before the murder. At the time of the murder, she was working as an office worker at a company that manufactures and sells lifestyle products in the city while raising a son.
Yasufuku and Satoru were members of the same high school soft tennis club. They met for the first time in about 20 years at an alumni reunion five months before the murder. Satoru had told those around him that he had remarried Namiko after his divorce and had given birth to their eldest son, Kohei.
Recalling that time, Yasufuku said, “I was at the height of my happiness.” According to investigators, Yasufuku had stated that he had had feelings for Satoru when they were students. At an alumni reunion, he said, “It was tough working and being a housewife at the same time.” Yasufuku is believed to have compared Satoru’s situation at the time of their reunion to his own family situation, and attacked Namiko in an attempt to leave Satoru to raise the child alone. However, due to some puzzling aspects of his explanation and his refusal to make a statement, the Aichi Prefectural Police are investigating the details and working to determine his motive. The Nagoya District Public Prosecutors Office has been detaining him for evaluation since November 14th to determine whether he is criminally responsible. Namiko was stabbed in the neck and died in her apartment on November 13th, 1999. Before remaining silent, Yasufuku had admitted to the charges and also told Namiko, “I’m sorry for what I did.” In an interview with the Mainichi Shimbun, Satoru said, “We didn’t have any deep discussions at the alumni reunion. I don’t know why I attacked Namiko, and I can’t understand it.” 【Related】Japan’s first nuclear power plant in 2019
